Zooomr Wish List

Posted by briandh on August 11, 2006

Before I get going I should say that I was going to call this post “Zooomr Grumps” but realized that would be unfair. It is still early days for Zooomr and I’m sure most, or all of this will be addressed in due course. There is also the chance that I just haven’t figured out how to do some of this stuff.

I like Zooomr and haven’t used any other Photo sharing service so can’t compare – and I got a free Pro account – so no “Grumps”, just a few things I would like.

OK, let’s get going (these are in no particular order):

Resetting the Privacy Level on a photo

I discovered this just tonight. I was browsing through my photos whilst logged out and realised that some were missing. I instantly knew what the problem was – I had forgotten to mark some photos as Public. No problem, I thought, I’ll just nip in and change them.

Nope. No way.

I searched and found a few people asking on the official blog- but no-one was answering – so it probably can’t be done – yet.

Sorting and Filtering

Smartsets are fine, but I would really like to be able to sort and filter on the same criteria that Smartsets are built from. So sort by upload date, photo taken date (when available) etc. Sorting by View count would also help my ego.

Permanently re-ordering photos the way I want them seen would be ideal. I only figured out that I needed to upload in reverse after I had got quite a few images up there.

Setting the column and row counts

The fixed three columns by nine rows is annoying when you have a larger screen and can afford to show more across the way.

Even just colours, and maybe framing of images would be nice.

Batch Tagging

You can Batch geo-tag so why not batch tagging too.

Size Limiting Privacy

You may want everyone to see your photos but you may not want them to have access to the full size image.

Another privacy related thing this. If you don’t want someone just to steal your work a subtle watermark would be a good idea. I know there are commercial solutions to this that embed coded messages into the images so you can track them but this would be a simpler, and cheaper, alternative. I suppose you could do it yourself – but link this to the other privacy stuff and you could have, for example, “everyone gets unmarked images up to ‘Medium’ but only family get unmarked ‘Large’ and ‘Original'”.

Smartset Viewer

When you click on a Smartset it takes you to a page which shows you the original Smartset thumbnail as a large image and all the others as thumbnails. Clicking on any image takes you to that image. However, you are now in the big list of all the persons pictures and the only way back to the Smartset is your browser’s back button.

A couple of things would be good here:

  1. the “Smartset viewer” could have little back and forward buttons on the main picture that would cycle round the images in the set, and/or
  2. when you click on an image it could remember what Smartset it came from and show you that list instead of the usual one at the top of the page.

That is all I can think of for now, I’ll add more as it comes to me.

I will leave you with another one of my masterpieces.
