I feel naked without my Zooomr

Posted by briandh on May 30, 2007

Things are looking a little bare around here at the moment – no photos.

Zooomr, where all my photos are hosted is currently down. They have not been having a very good time of it. It’s a bit like one of those good-news-bad-news stories:

  • They tried to launch their “Mark III” version of the site several weeks ago …
  • … and discovered they had seriously under-estimated the scale of the task so had to abandon it.
  • They then had a hard disk cough blood on them …
  • … and then nursed it back to health
  • They tried another launch a little over a week ago …
  • .. and it took longer than anticipate.
  • But they stuck with it and they got the site up yesterday …
  • … and their server crashed after 10 minutes.

I’ll not go into details here as you will find it being blogged about all over the place:

Scobleizer

To anyone that says: “Oh, snivel snivel, I’ve lost all my photos – what have they DONE!” two things:

  1. Backups – they have them even if your too stupid to have made your own.
  2. It’s a free service on the Internet run by two guys on a shoe-string – see 1. above.

I truly hope it works out for them. It’s a fun site and the features promised in Mark III looked excellent.

Good luck guys.

Smoothed Jersey Panorama

Posted by briandh on October 22, 2006

Taking the techniques I learned from smoothing my Menorcan night shots, I have improved (I think) my existing Jersey Panorama.

Smooth Nights

Posted by briandh on October 21, 2006

Introduction

I promised in my Menorcan Memories post to let you know how I got on smoothing out some of my night shots taken from my balcony. Jumping straight to the answer – pretty well, I think.

jUploadr prompts a rethink

Posted by briandh on September 10, 2006

Oh yes! I know I'm cute.

Now that Zooom has a bulk uploader, in the shape of jUploader, I need to rethink how I upload my images. With a bulk uploader the temptation is to upload far more photos – but it is not that much quicker.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, it is a lot more convenient and it does save a fair bit of my time in the actual selection and upload process. However, the physical upload process takes exactly the same amount of time – you just don’t need to nursemaid it so much.

Creating a Zooomr SmartSet

Posted by briandh on September 2, 2006

I wrote briefly in an earlier Blog about using the Zooomr SmartSet feature. Whilst checking my blog stats I noticed that people were looking for help on using this feature and that there wasn’t much around.

At first this surprised me as, to me, the SmartSet feature is very intuitive. However, I am a software engineer with an interest in photography whereas many Zooomr users may be photographers with little or no interest or talent in computers.

So, here is the low down on how to use SmartSets

Jazzy Portals

Posted by briandh on August 27, 2006

Fresh from my success with my Iona Portal Tour, I have taken my photos from the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Jazz on a Summers Day concert and linked them together through portals.

I think you should be able to get to all of the 40+ images although you may occasionally have to back track.

Let me know what you think.

Through the Zooomr Portal

Posted by briandh on August 27, 2006

I have just found a new feature in Zooomr – Portals.

These are actually very simple in principle but add huge possibilities and are such fun to use. Quite simply you can add any number of rectangular hotspots to your images, these hotspots can be linked to any of you other photos and have a bit of text beside them.

Real of fake?

Posted by briandh on August 19, 2006

PerfectIsland

I took this photo about four years ago on a ferry from Oban to Mull en-route to Iona.

It struck me at the time that it looks a little unreal, or maybe “too real”, as if it were the output of a fractal landscape generator. Looking at it again now, it still has that strange feel to it.

Another thing about this image is that it was taken by my then fairly new digital camera. Looking at it now I am very happy with the quality of the image.

Whilst uploading old images to Zooomr I was recently struck by how much better my old 35mm scanned photos were compared to my recent digital ones. This image, and some others I have since reviewed, have renewed my faith in my digital camera. Maybe the problem isn’t the camera – maybe its me.

Zooomr can embarass you

Posted by briandh on August 16, 2006

09-31A MV Oooh Err

I’m the family IT expert. This means that when we’re invited round to dinner I spend most of the visit chained to the broken computer sorting out the mess and telling them how to do stuff, removing spyware, virii and assorted nastiness. It also means that I try and keep family up to date with new things that might help them.

My mother in law is fairly switched on and also, like me, likes a bit of digital photography. So I thought she might be interested in Zooomr. I sent off an email pointing her at my Zooomr site and saying that next time I’m round I’ll show her how to get it working for her own photos.
